During holidays and special occasions, Alyssa's maternal grandmother, Ms. Darling, pioneers her family's two sacred traditions: cooking the curry goat and steeping the sorrel.

"Dark and pretty," Ms. Darling always says.

 

This rang through Alyssa's mind her first time making sorrel alone, without her grandma and mother. Dark and pretty. Dark. Pretty.  ​
